The salt and sand on the roads can make vehicles look filthy after a snowstorm. However, it’s not only about aesthetics - the salt can also corrode the car.
Auto experts say this is why it's important to keep your car clean and washed. The salt and dirt may cause part of the car to rust.
Mechanics at J&M Auto Repair say salt, ice, and potholes make winter a rough time for vehicles.
Here are some tips to protect your car in the winter
- Clear snow off your car properly
- Scrape ice off windshields before turning on wipers
- Wash your car, including the undercarriage, regularly
- Visit your mechanic for preventative maintenance at least twice a year
“This weather is the worst thing for these cars,” mechanic Michael Dolinsky said. “It's not going to do it tomorrow, but long term it's going to absolutely do damage to the car.”
That’s why preventative maintenance and regular car washes, including the undercarriage, are essential in the winter.
“The sooner you get [the salt] off, the sooner you prevent corrosion,” said John, the owner of Spotless Car Wash.
