Do it yesterday considering the roads out we are talking about this freeze over that we have and the roads being very dangerous. Yes, and once you get down lower than 20 degrees, really under 15, that's where it takes a little extra oomph. Some of the rock salt doesn't work, so that's one of the things that we're watching here this morning again. The wind chill feels like temperatures are in the single digits. So if you've got to stand outside for a while, work outside, you've got. To bundle up. This is cold stuff here starting out our morning hours and the actual air temperatures 18, Shirley, 18 right now in Hampton Bay 19 in Farmerdale, 19. Good morning to you in Masspeaker 20 ocean side, 20 over towards out towards the Montauk. We're at 19, so we're cold. We picked up anywhere from about 4 to 8 inches of snow for most of us, and we have the cold weather conditions and out the door this morning. Schools, a lot of them have delays. A lot of them have those 2 hours delay that will help the sun get up here and work burning off that ice this morning as well. So icy roads this morning, temperatures are near 20. Wind chills are in the single digits. We stay cold this afternoon at 20. 9 degrees breezy and cold weather conditions out here for today. Now this morning we have sunshine. This afternoon some clouds will move in, especially after about 3 to 4 o'clock. There's going to be a chance of a few flurries or a passing snow shower overnight. We have the dry weather now and then as we head through the overnight hours right here, see this little area here and also out of the ocean as this moves on by, can't rule out a few flurries. Or a quick passing snow shower. Lows overnight or in the lower 20s. It's going to be another cold overnight. We'll have to watch out for some ice and then going into your Tuesday afternoon sunshine, a little bit warmer but still quite cold. Temperatures will be in the 30s and then by the time we head towards Tuesday night, warm air starts to move in. How about some 40s now going towards Wednesday and a potential of some 50s going towards Thursday. So for today, temperatures upper 20s to around 30 degrees. Watch out for black ice this morning. Icy road conditions, breezy and cold. Clouds come in during the afternoon. Overnight lows are in the 20s. It's cold. Wind chills are in the teens. Tomorrow, still cold, highs are in the 30s. Village of Patchogue declares state of emergency following overnight snowfall

The village of Patchogue declared a state of emergency after the storm dumped a total of 7 inches in the area. Newswell's Jenna Ray Gardner went to downtown to check on the conditions. Piles of snow, slush, and icy sidewalks were some of the things left behind from the storm. If you have to go out, you got to go out, but just be careful. But the roads were clear in Patchogue. Nobody does it the way we do it. You can see the blackup. Mayor Paul Pontieri declared a state of emergency Sunday morning, asking people to stay inside and park in driveways to make way for the snowplows. They took care of it. The Roads are clear now. They do the right thing in the village. Vincent Canizio says there weren't as many people downtown today, and it's going to be a lot more of the Uber drivers that are going to be doing the deliveries. But the people who were there say it could have been worse. State of emergency, that might be a bit much, but you should still be careful out there. Despite the cold, people are soaking in the beauty of the first snowfall. Honestly, it's magical. I haven't seen snow in so many years and. Up this morning and seeing the snow outside made me feel like a little kid again, and the kids themselves were thrilled too. I was really excited because as it snowed in a really long time, I was really shocked. We went out, we took cups, and we made like snowballs with them. While the mayor says he wants everyone to enjoy the weather, he says he doesn't want people to forget the dangers. People need to understand how dangerous it can be. You know, you, you get this little bit of black ice, this stuff that people don't realize. The mayor also told me that declaring a state of emergency helps the village get funding to help deal with the aftermath of the storm. He urges people to stay alert and be careful, especially as temperatures drop and these roads and sidewalks become icy again. In Patchogue, Suffolk County, Jenna Ray Gartner, News 12.

The peak this year is the overnight of Dec. 13-14 , but you may be able to see some stray meteors, or “shooting stars” until the winter solstice on Dec. 21.

Well, I'm here to let you know that this year we will not be able to see the Geminid meteor shower during its peak. That happens this weekend. Instead of shooting stars or meteors flying through our sky, we're actually going to be looking at snowflakes. Unfortunately, there will be accumulating snow all throughout the tri-state area. Now past the weekend, you still may be able to see some meteors. The shower is ongoing. After the peak right through the winter solstice, and it's named after Gemini, the constellation, the twins. This rises high in the eastern sky during the evening hours. You're going to want to look after about 8 or 9 o'clock, and it's pretty bright. We have Castor and Pollux. These are two of the bright stars in the constellation this year nearby we also have Jupiter. Maybe you've seen Jupiter, a really bright star looking object in the eastern sky. Well, that's actually a planet, so that's pretty cool, but we have to wait until next week once our sky starts to clear out. Temperatures are going to be pretty cold, and that's the problem this time of year. You really have to layer up and bundle up during the winter months. This is a really good shower. It's actually one of the best. It's rich. It's known for its fast and bright meteors here. It's actually debris from an asteroid. That's the cool thing. And that's the rare thing usually it's debris from comets, but this asteroid orbits close to the sun every year and a half years. So that's why this shower is so rich and filled with meteors. We can even see it here in the tri-state area, but of course you want to go away from the city lights. That is the problem this year. It's more of a cloud cover thing and a storm thing, but hey, we're heading towards the solstice, and that will be the end of the meteor. Shower that's actually next Sunday, December 21st. It's the shortest day of the year, least amount of sunshine. We know that just over nine hours of that, and that happens at 10 o'clock in the morning. Maybe you've noticed this already if you pay attention at night. Have you noticed that the sun isn't setting any earlier? It stopped, and that actually happened back on December 7th. Now as we head towards the. Solstice, of course the days get shorter and shorter, but we're losing minutes in the morning here, so that's going to keep changing through the solstice and then January 7th is actually the latest sunrise, so just something interesting to tell your friends. Christmas is quickly approaching, and the question on everyone’s mind is if we’ll have a white Christmas.

I'm meteorologist Skyler Day Harmon with just over 2 weeks until Christmas Day, the question on everyone's mind is, will it be a white Christmas? Well, taking a look at historical chances of that happening, not very likely for most of the tri-state. Most of our area seeing a 10 to 20% chance, but portions of the Hudson Valley into northwestern portions of Connecticut and northwestern parts of New Jersey have a. Slightly higher chance, maybe between 30% and 40%, whereas it's even less as you go down the Jersey Shore to portions of Ocean County and south, more between 5 to 10%. Now in order for us to qualify for a white Christmas, we have to see an inch of snow on the ground or more. Now, when was the last white Christmas for much of the tri-state for Central Park and White Plains, it was just last year, but areas like It's been a long time since 2013. Bridgeport and Newark not seeing a white Christmas since 2009. Now as we look to those temperature trends leading up to Christmas Day, we're trending a touch warmer and our precipitation is expected to be around where it normally is. Now as we head into those last two weeks before Christmas, we'll keep our fingers crossed that we could finally have another white Christmas around the tri-state.

Unseasonably cold weather back to start off the new workweek

Yeah, we're doing all right this morning. We're bundled up here in Babylon. We're speaking with Long Islanders who are grabbing a cup of coffee on their way out the door, whether they're heading to work, they're catching the train, wherever it may be to see how they're handling the really cold temperatures. You know, it is a bitter blast right now and it certainly feels that way. Again, we're layered up. I got multiple layers on just trying to stay warm today. The best advice that we're hearing from a lot of people is, you know, they've got the coats, the hats, the scarves, the gloves, the earmuffs, everything you really need today. That's the essentials, and they're making sure you know that they are taking care of themselves and their pets a lot of people walking their dogs today as well, making those walks pretty quick just to try and get in and out and make sure everyone stays safe and you know. Morning I actually spoke with a doctor here, a couple of local hospitals, to talk about, you know, not only some of these safety precautions, things people need to take, but also about the real risk. People think, Oh, it's New York and it gets cold and we're used to it, but there is real risk associated with being out too long in weather like this, and hospitals here in our area are seeing people who don't take the cold seriously enough. This time of year, we do see a lot of cold weather emergencies. Um, there are people who are outside suffer from localized problems like frostbite, and then there's other people who have exposure for a long enough period where they can get hypothermia. Both those things obviously very serious, so you want to make sure you're taking all the precautions. The layers limit your time outside and make sure you're checking on people today, your neighbors, people that are a little bit older in the community, and keep an eye on the pets as well. You want to make sure everyone stays safe as the cold weather continues to linger on here on Long Island. We're in Babylon, Suffolk County. Jonathan Gordon, News 12.
