The Brookhaven Town Board is seeking to build an ice hockey rink at the site of the former Dowling College campus in Shirley.
A site plan hearing before the planning board is scheduled for March 26, according to Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico.
Panico said the town has taken over ownership of the property and the attached athletic fields, which need extensive repairs and upgrades. He added that the roughly 105-acre site will be redeveloped into smaller industrial spaces in three large buildings, with 28 acres being dedicated to the town as open space and about 17 acres dedicated to the ice rink.
News 12 has reported several nuisance issues at the abandoned college, which went bankrupt in 2017. Last month, windows, walls and other items
were damaged at the college.
