The Bronx District Attorney's Office and the ASPCA rescued 30 animals from the "Pet Life" shelter on Gun Hill Road in Williamsbridge on Thursday.
"The animals were seized from the property following the execution of a search warrant after authorities received multiple reports of animals living in poor conditions," said the ASPCA in a statement to News 12.
In the joint effort, the ASPCA said they rescued cats, dogs and rabbits.
Police sources told News 12 that police put out a search warrant for animal abuse following multiple complaints to 311.
"And I'm not surprised at all," said Jay Allen, a former customer of the shelter.
According to city data, more than eighty 311 complaints have been filed since 2023, all reports of animal abuse, unsanitary conditions and pet store operations.
Allen described the conditions inside the shelter, citing a strong smell of urine and feces, and multiple animals sharing small cages.
"There was no room for them to move around, it was just very poor conditions," he said.
News 12's Marissa Santorelli spoke with the owner of the shelter. She requested not to appear on camera.
The owner denied all claims of neglect and abuse. She said no charges have been pressed. Her doors remain open and the shelter is still accepting "surrender" pets.
The ASPCA told News 12 the rescued animals are receiving veterinary exams and will be taken to a facility for medical and behavioral care.
