John Miro, a Nassau County crossing guard struck by a pickup truck last week near the Merrick Long Island Rail Road station, has died.

Miro was hit by a suspected drugged driver last Thursday – identified as Joshua Alvarado. He is facing upgraded charges of manslaughter and assault. He pleaded not guilty in court, saying he had to take prescription medication to help with his PTSD.

CSEA Nassau Local 830, a public service union, announced his death in a Facebook post.

“John was struck while performing his duties protecting children in Merrick on February 26, 2026. John has passed away today from his injuries,” it said. “Crossing guards serve our communities with courage and dedication, standing in the roadway each day to keep our children safe. John answered that call of service, and his commitment will not be forgotten.”

"Mr. Miro woke up that morning,” said union president Kris Kalender. “He got ready for work like he always does. He came in like he always does and had a smile on his face. And unfortunately, tragedy happens.”

Kalender says it’s a dangerous but essential job.

“Every day they come in because they love what they do,” Kalender said. “They love the children. And the families love the crossing guards.”

News 12 reported that Miro, 70, underwent emergency surgery and was in critical condition after the incident.

Andy Fox with Project Thank a Cop says all profits from their Thank a Cop fundraising event will go to Miro’s family. The event is at La Novella Ristorante in East Meadow on April 18.

“It breaks your heart. It’s something that never should have happened,” Fox said. “John passed away a hero. He was taking care of the neighborhood kids. And he sacrificed his life for the safety of the +-kids.”
