A West Babylon man is facing up to 25 years in prison after being convicted of repeatedly sexually abusing a young girl, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors say the 29-year-old was a family friend of the victim and began abusing her when she was just 9 years old.
The child initially viewed the man as an uncle-type figure and regularly engaged in Zoom calls where they discussed television, games and superheroes.
He eventually started to show the girl pornographic material on those calls, according to authorities.
His behavior escalated to in-person abuse in March 2022, when he was brought to the girl’s home to babysit.
Authorities say she learned that this conduct was wrong after viewing a school presentation at the age of twelve.
She went on to confront the man and told him she did not want him to touch her anymore. Prosecutors say the abuse stopped following the confrontation.
After several months of experiencing anxiety and panic attacks, she disclosed the abuse to her mother.
A jury found the man guilty of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child on Friday.
