Juvenile humpbacks freed from Fire Island sandbars after hourslong stranding
The tide has turned for two juvenile humpback whales stranded off Fire Island.
The two young humpback whales, which were stranded off the Fire Island National Seashore, are now swimming freely again, according to NOAA.
Officials say the two juvenile whales became stuck on the sandbars during Wednesday morning's low tide after reportedly feeding in the area.

NOAA, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and other agencies responded to the scene, providing supportive care throughout the hourslong incident, while monitoring whether the whales would "refloat" during the next high tide.
Both whales successfully returned to the ocean around 3:30 p.m., NOAA says.

Officials also reported seeing several other whales in the area lunge-feeding, a hunting technique in which whales surge rapidly through the water with their mouths open to capture prey.
