The Islip Town Board passed an 18-month ban against building new data center facilities on Tuesday.

Data centers house rows of computer servers that store, process information and assist in the running and training of Artificial Intelligence.

Islip is the second Long Island town to impart the ban, coming a month after the Town of Brookhaven.

The state also enacted a yearlong pause on new data centers in July, arguing that time is needed to assess risks and create rules to protect the environment.
