If you received a red light camera ticket in Suffolk County, you could be entitled to a refund through a class action settlement.

The settlement stems from allegations that Suffolk County charged administrative fees that exceeded what was permitted under state law.

"They are sort of correcting a wrong," said attorney David Raimondo.

According to Raimondo, the issue centered on administrative fees that were attached to red light camera tickets.

"It turns out that the fee that was being charged was in excess of what's called the enabling statute in Suffolk County," he said.

The refunds are the result of a class action lawsuit that has taken years to resolve.

Suffolk County stopped charging the administrative fees in January 2023 following an appellate court ruling. The county later ended its red light camera program in December 2024.

Under the proposed settlement, eligible claimants could receive $36 per ticket ($30 fee refund plus $6 interest), pending final judicial approval.

Postcards were mailed Wednesday to drivers who paid administrative fees on red light camera tickets issued after April 1, 2013.

Claims can be submitted online at suffolkredlightsettlement.com.

Drivers have until Dec. 8 to submit a claim form. Those who wish to opt out of the settlement have until Nov. 9.

Attorney David Raimondo says Nassau County also charged what he describes as illegal fees of up to $100. While Nassau County has stopped charging those fees, it has not agreed to a settlement.
