A young seal is on the mend after being found stranded in Southampton suffering from several issues.

The New York Marine Rescue Center said biologists rescued the female yearling seal, estimated to be between 1 and 2 years old, on Tuesday.

The seal was reported with open wounds on the beach that the rescue center believes are from a predator, potentially a shark.

Responders saw the seal had a swollen right flipper and a medical examination later revealed the seal was also dehydrated and had parasites.

She is now on antibiotics and pain medication while she receives treatment and rehabilitation from NYMRC staff.

The young seal will be with NYMRC for at least a month but most likely two before she is ready to be returned to swim back into the wild.
