News 12 has confirmed that one person has died in a New Cassel house fire.

Dozens of firefighters responded to the house fire on Arlington Street around 7:30 a.m.

Officials say a man was trapped on the second floor and first responders tried to rescue him.

“A neighboring fire chief on his way to work, happens to be one of my fire marshals, stopped, made entry and did try to get to the room where the report of the victim was,” Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said. “Unfortunately, the fire conditions deteriorated rapidly, and he had to back out.”

No one else was injured.

Three other adults that live in the home are now being assisted by the Red Cross.

Police say the man who died was 74 years old. His name has not been released.

The chief fire marshal for Nassau County tells News 12 the house is a rental property for adults with special needs.

Fire officials do not believe the cause of the fire to be suspicious.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
