The Sachem Central School District said an unexpected electrical service outage on Wednesday affected several schools, causing multiple critical systems to fail.
All district schools will be closed so the facilities department can repair the problem. A decision on reopening will be made by 7 tonight after district officials consult with the facilities team, a district spokesperson said.
The district spokesperson said Sachem East is currently experiencing electrical issues involving the exterior main circuit affecting electricity, phones, and internet service. This issue has affected several buildings due to their connection to this circuit.
The issue began Tuesday evening, was restored around 11 p.m., and then failed again at approximately 3:30 a.m., according to a district spokesperson.
The decision to close all schools was made after careful evaluation to ensure the safety and continuity of operations across the district, the spokesperson said.
A spokesperson from PSEG said the issue is not related to PSEG Long Island equipment, but they are prepared to assist the district if needed.
Sachem East was open to students Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. to retrieve any necessary items needed to participate in remote learning, in an effort to prepare for the possibility of remote instruction Thursday, according to the district.
The district is hopeful that in-person instruction will resume on Thursday, but officials are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
