A man died in a multi-vehicle crash on Sunrise Highway in Southampton, according to the Southampton Town Police Department.
Police reported a road closure around 3 p.m., saying motorists should avoid the area of Shrubland Road and westbound at Tuckahoe Road as they investigated a serious incident. The road closure lasted hours, reopening around 7:30 p.m.
When they arrived at the scene, police say they saw five vehicles involved in a crash, culminating into a head-on collision between a Dodge Ram and GMC van and that the road was unpassable due to the many mangled vehicles.
The driver of the GMC, Anasser Almontaser, 33, of Staten Island, had to be extricated and was declared dead at the scene.
Police interviewed a witness at the scene who said they saw the GMC van move out of its lane and side-swipe a Volkswagen SUV going in the opposite direction. The GMC van then hit a Toyota, which caused construction gear to fly out of the bed of the truck and hit a third vehicle, a flat bed tow truck, before finally striking a Dodge Ram head-on.
Police say the collisions caused a debris field of over 600 feet and left four vehicles essentially totaled.
Three other people were taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Police used an Unmanned Aircraft Unit to document what they called a "horrific crash."
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Southampton Town Police Detective Division.
