The final phase of cleanup from September’s nor’easter is now underway in the Town of Huntington, where crews are processing enormous piles of storm debris collected from across the community.
Town officials say trees and branches came down at approximately 650 locations during the storm, leaving behind massive amounts of debris. Crews are now grinding the material into wood chips as part of the town’s recovery effort.
According to Huntington Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino, grinding down the debris makes it easier to deliver to the landfill.
“They’re grinding all the debris that we took in over the storm a couple of weeks ago, and it’s good for the environment, obviously. We’re going to reduce the amount of trucking by more than half,” Sorrentino said.
Officials say grinding the debris significantly reduces its volume, allowing it to be transported to landfills in fewer trips.
