A New York Army National Guard Major who called Rockland County home is being remembered for a lifetime dedicated to serving others.
Officials say Major Sorffly Davius, 46, died March 6 in Kuwait after suffering a medical episode.
Davius was deployed in the summer of 2025 in support of Operation Spartan Shield.
Michael Hoblin, Rockland County’s deputy county executive, served with Davius in the New York National Guard.
Hoblin said Davius stopped by his office several years ago—long after the two had last served together.
“When you leave a job, people often forget about you,” Hoblin said. “For someone to stop by over 10 years later just to come in and say hello, I think that was a testament to who he was as a person.”
Hoblin says he is honoring Davius by wearing a pin in his memory. He also emphasized the importance of supporting the soldier’s family
“We have to rally around them, make sure they’re taken care of, make sure the kids are taken care of, make sure they’re supported as members of this community,” Hoblin said. “They cannot be forgotten.”
Davius spent much of his adult life in uniform when looking at his resume.
Before transferring to the National Guard, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
According to the NYPD, he joined the department in 2014 and was assigned to the 79th Precinct in Brooklyn.
Before that he was a FDNY paramedic.
Local leaders are also paying tribute.
The town of Clarkstown has lowered all flags to honor the fallen resident.
Davius lived in New City and is survived by his wife and six children.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
In a joint statement, the Rockland County Executive Ed Day and the chair of the county Legislature, Jay Hood Jr., praised Davius’ dedication.
“His commitment to protecting and helping others, both here at home and while serving our nation overseas, is a true testament to his character and courage,” the statement read.
Flags will fly at half staff in his honor.
