Beachgoers are being urged to stay out of the water across Long Island after heavy rain.

Health officials in Nassau and Suffolk counties say stormwater runoff may have caused elevated bacteria levels at 83 North and South Shore beaches.

The advisory is a precaution for areas affected by runoff following recent rainfall.

Officials recommend avoiding swimming and any water contact until conditions improve.

They say beaches should clear after two successive tidal cycles, or at least 24 hours after the rain ends.
